For Class 10th, students need to be at least 14 years old — there's no compulsory school-leaving certificate required. For Class 12th, students must be at least 15 and have already passed Class 10th from a recognised board.
NIOS is a national board under India's Ministry of Education, at par with CBSE and ICSE. Its certificates are accepted for university admissions, government and corporate jobs, and competitive exams like JEE, NEET and CUET.
Public exams are held twice annually — one cycle around April–May and another around October–November — so you're never stuck waiting a full year to appear.
Especially at the 12th level, you're not locked into a single stream — subjects can be combined across Arts, Commerce and Science based on what you actually need.
Your registration stays valid for several years, with multiple exam attempts available in that window — so one difficult subject doesn't have to derail everything else.
NIOS provides official printed and digital study material for every registered subject, which we supplement with classroom teaching at the centre.

No — NIOS is designed for self-paced study. Regular classroom attendance isn't compulsory, though practical sessions and exams do need to be attended at the coaching centre.
Public exams are offline, pen-and-paper papers, usually around 3 hours long, held twice a year (April–May and October–November).
NIOS also runs On-Demand Exams, where you can appear again for specific subjects (up to 4 at a time) to clear or improve them, without waiting for the next full cycle.
Yes, movement between NIOS and other recognised boards is possible, and in some cases marks from previously passed subjects can be carried over (Transfer of Credit).
